The first intermediate outcome of my UKRI project for public engagement are Photon Bricks, which is a shortcut for a Michelson interferometer made entirely of Lego bricks and simple optical componets.

This project demonstrates the principle of light interference using components like a low-power laser, mirrors, lenses, and beam splitters mounted on adjustable Lego-based optical supports. The modular Photon Bricks bases provide mechanical stability and scalability for optical experiments. Developed in collaboration with around 25 University of Nottingham students, I showcased this setup at the UK National Quantum Technologies Showcase (8/11/2024) and the Security BSides London 2024 conference as part of the Quantum Village initiative (14/12/2024). Next year, the interferometer will feature in the Cosmic Titans art-science exhibition in Nottingham, with hands-on workshops inviting participants to build their own optical experiments.
